Structured like an imposing fortress, it keeps intact an atmosphere of profound spirituality in the isolation and rugged beauty of the surrounding nature that encourages meditation. Its origins date back to 1192 when the Camaldolese built a small hermitage, a hospital and a hospice for pilgrims and travelers on the site previously occupied by a fortress that guarded an important mule track connecting Valtiberina and the Marche Apennine side.

The fortress was abandoned together with the nearby Bofolci castle around 1187, following a prescription that forced the feudal lords of the countryside to move inside the walls of the city of the Borgo, but the importance of the place as a transit of ‘pilgrims from Rome’ remained unchanged. . In 1213 the hermitage and the adjoining hospital of S. Maria di Montecasale were ceded by the Camaldolese abbot to S. Francesco, of which the place holds faithful memory in some events mentioned in the biographical sources of the saint: the episode is famous. of the entry into the order of a young man from the Tarlati di Sansepolcro, who was given the name of Angelo (Fioretti); the anecdotal episode of cabbages planted upside down narrated by Fra Bartolomeo da Pisa or the conversion of the three thieves reported by various historical sources.

In the first half of the thirteenth century Montecasale also welcomed S. Antonio da Padova and S. Bonaventura da Bagnoregio, housed in the small and unadorned cells which can be accessed through a small door from the choir.

Progressively abandoned starting from the mid-thirteenth century by the minor friars who moved to the new convent of Sansepolcro, it was the seat of the Franciscan tertiaries, then passed to the Capuchins, who still reside there today.

The complex has the primitive structural layout of the oldest Franciscan convents, with a small central cloister which is joined by various buildings related to monastic functions.

The small church dedicated to S. Maria, simple but suggestive, preserves a valuable 13th century polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the Madonna with Child, brought here according to tradition by S. Francesco himself from the ruins of the castle.

Also of great interest is the oratory of S. Francesco, built around the stone bed that the friar used as a resting place sheltered by branches. On the altar a Crucifix from the 15th-16th centuries; a 16th century Pietà in a niche on the right wall. in sun-dried clay and the skulls of two of the thieves converted by the saint.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”18px” font_weight=”400″ line_height=”30px” css=”.vc_custom_1643893998589{margin-top: 50px !important;}”]

Montacuto and the legend of the San Francesco habit

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1643894017309{margin-top: 40px !important;}” font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”12px” font_weight=”700″ line_height=”20px”]deviating from the S.P. 43 della Libbia, just past the town of Tavernelle in the direction of Arezzo, you reach the place of spiritual exercises known as the Cenacle of Montauto.

The slope is characterized by three buildings of considerable architectural and historical-religious interest. Dominating the area is the fortified villa La Barbolana (second half of the 16th century), an extraordinary private residence set on a square plan with recessed corner bastions and a central tower. A little further on, a cypress forest hides the Montauto Convent, while the road continues to the fence that delimits the hunting estate of the Montauto Castle, an authentic ‘eagle’s nest’ dominating the Tiber and Arno valleys. The history of the Convent is due to the lords of Montauto, whose county was so powerful as to represent one of the last imperial fiefs, and to the encounter with the saint of Assisi.

In fact, some relics have been preserved inside it for a long time, including a flap of the habit of St. Francis. In September 1224, returning from La Verna, the Saint stopped in Montauto where Count Alberto Barbolani offered him a new habit in exchange for the one he wore, soiled by the blood of the stigmata and stitched up in the tears with broom stalks.

St. Francis indulged the courtesy of the Count, who also expressed the will to build a convent for his followers: however, it took three centuries before this promise was kept.

In fact, it is said that long after the Saint, having not forgotten the promise he had received, he appeared together with S. Antonio to a descendant of Count Alberto, who received an indication of where to build the church and convent. Legend also has it that the broom stalks with which the habit was mended blossomed every spring.

The relic, confiscated by the Florentines in 1503, was transported to the church of Ognissanti in Florence, then a few years ago it was placed inside the Basilica of the Sanctuary of La Verna.Saved from war destruction, the Convent has been inhabited by the Sisters of Our Lady since 1960. del Cenacolo and is structured for the reception of guests in small bedrooms located near the splendid wood and the centuries-old holm oak next to the church.

For a possible visit of the interiors it is advisable to make arrangements with the owners, after contacting the headquarters of the Anghiari Museum System (tel. 0575 787023 fax 0575 787356; Battaglia@anghiari.it).[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”18px” font_weight=”400″ line_height=”30px” css=”.vc_custom_1643894038507{margin-top: 50px !important;}”]

Afternoon: Anghiari – a village between heaven and earth

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1643894054595{margin-top: 40px !important;}” font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”12px” font_weight=”700″ line_height=”20px”]Country with a strong tourist vocation, thanks also to its enchanting views, Anghiari boasts ancient origins and presents itself to the visitor with its characteristic medieval aspect, positioned on a hill overlooking the Tiber and Sovara valleys. The picturesque stone houses, the alleys, the stairs, the suggestive squares, evidence of historical values handed down through the centuries.

It was certainly during the Middle Ages that Anghiari assumed the greatest importance above all for its evident strategic position: it is mentioned for the first time in a parchment of 1048, preserved in the archive of Città di Castello, even if the first settlements were in Roman times.

Dominion of the Lords of Galbino first and then of the Camaldolese, the town saw one of the most important moments in its history in the Battle of Anghiari which, on June 29, 1440, marked the victory of the Florentine troops, allied with the Pope over the Milanese army.

With the formation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the community of Anghiari expanded its territories beyond the Tiber. After the Napoleonic events and those of the Restoration, Anghiari actively lived the years of the Risorgimento, until the plebiscite of 1860 which sanctioned its accession to the Kingdom of the Savoy.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”18px” font_weight=”400″ line_height=”30px” css=”.vc_custom_1643894068218{margin-top: 50px !important;}”]

The convent of the Cross

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1643894086547{margin-top: 40px !important;}” font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”12px” font_weight=”700″ line_height=”20px”]the church, extraordinary architectural background of the ancient Ruga di S. Martino which seems to cut Anghiari into two and then continue in the long straight line up to Sansepolcro, was built following the passage in this place of San Francesco in 1224, when the Saint planted a cross at the top of the hill at the junction of three paths. The faithful built a small chapel on the spot, which was followed by the construction of houses and palaces: it was thus that the new village took the name of Borgo della Croce. Friar Francesco, tried by the long period of penance on Monte della Verna, returned to Assisi after receiving the signs of the passion of Jesus Christ: the cross, planted in Anghiari on that splendid balcony that opens onto the Tiber valley, far from the castle walls , thus becomes testimony of the living cross which he carried and therefore of the passage of Christ. On the death of Francis the presence of his friars became more and more assiduous in the area: the clogs, so called because of the wooden base of their sandals, came from La Verna to look for grain and oil.

As evidence of their stay in Anghiari, the former Hospice of the Friars still exists, almost at the bottom of the steep descent of the Ruga, today the seat of the Confraternity of Mercy.

The popular devotion to the Saint of Assisi finally found expression in the transformation during the second half of the 15th century. of the old Hospital of S. Martino, located at the top of the fourteenth-century road, in the Convent for the Sisters of S. Chiara.

Construction of the church began in 1499 and ended in 1566: the façade is characterized by the elegant portico with arches on Doric columns, closed in the 19th century to house an elementary school and a kindergarten. The 1987 restorations returned the building to its original forms: inside a canvas by Domenico Cresti (called Il Passignano), a seventeenth-century painting with the Discovery of the Cross attributed to the Florentine painter Carlo Dolci, a fresco of the sixteenth century. depicting the Annunciation and a painting with Madonna in Glory among Saints attributed to the Florentine Giovan Battista Susini, in the background of which you can see an interesting glimpse of Anghiari in the mid-seventeenth century.

Inside the church there is also the sepulchral plaque of the historian Lorenzo Taglieschi (1598-1654), from whose Annals of the Land of Anghiari we owe the knowledge of much of the history of the town and its surroundings.

Thanks to a public subscription in 1868, the Convent of the Cross was transformed into a hospital, a health facility that operated for about one hundred and twenty years until it was converted into the headquarters of the socio-health district and protected residence for the elderly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1643631175693{background: #ffffff url(https://hotelvillasandonino.it/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/itinerari-1200×300-1.jpg?id=291) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}” min_height=”400px”][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1643630832910{margin-top: -40px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}” el_class=”corpo”][vc_column][vc_column_text font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”18px” font_weight=”400″ line_height=”30px” css=”.vc_custom_1643893964219{margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”] Morning: the hermitage of Montecasale [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1643893981782{margin-top: 40px !important;}” font_family=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” color=”#444444″ font_size=”12px” font_weight=”700″ line_height=”20px”]It is located on a hill overlooking the valley…

[15
["post-611","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-itineraries","entry","has-media
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
